Welcome to our Calendar of Events.
It’s Sunday, November 22nd and you open your cupboard to find them, well, bare. You knew it was coming — it’s not the first time you’ve run out of food before payday, and it probably won’t be the last either — but that doesn’t make you feel any better, or any less hungry. After checking your bank account balance and crunching the numbers, you figure out that thanks to a whole $12.00 in SNAP benefits, you have a whopping total of $38.50 to feed yourself for the week. Averaged out, that’s $5.50 a day…not ideal, but it will have to do.
- Eat on $38.50* for the week, and don’t forget it also includes beverages!
- Keep track of receipts on food spending and take note of your experiences throughout the week.
- Engage your friends and family through social media! Blog it, tweet it, Facebook it, tumblr-reblog it, instagram it…you get the idea! Use the hashtag #UncoverHunger to share it with everyone.
*We realize this year’s Challenge overlaps with Thanksgiving, so you don’t have to count spending for your holiday meal, unless you want to, of course. Take the Challenge for a few days, a whole week including or excluding Thanksgiving, etc. Just remember what it means to have that choice — while we can simply stop or pause the challenge with ease to fit our holiday traditions, over 59,000 of our neighbors live with food insecurity every day, and the choices they have are much more limited.
