Saturday, Apr. 21st in Downtown Canton

Tim Carmany would like you to go to the prom with him. More specifically, he would like you to attend the Canton Prom on April 21, a fun spring formal he is organizing at downtown Canton’s swanky Canton Club.

There will be dancing and photos and a coronation, just like at high-school proms, but this one is for ages 21 and older, so there will be cocktails, too. And hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are $20 single or $30 per couple, with proceeds to benefit the Stark County Hunger Task Force.

“My prom in high school was pretty bad,” says Carmany, 26, an easygoing, affable guy who grew up in Huntington, Ohio. “I just want this to be a good party. It’s not going to be a bunch of thirtysomething people in prom dresses sitting around a bar getting drunk trying to re-live anything. The atmosphere is going to be really classy. It will be nice just to be there at the event, mingling, talking, drinking. Or you can get down and dance.”

The prom will run from 8 p.m. to midnight. There will be live “jazzy-bluesy” music from the local combo Cyphert until 9:30, when deejay dance music will begin. The ticket price includes hors d’oeuvres and either a free drink or free photo. Food is being donated by Pete’s Grille, Arcadia Grille, Chik-fil-A, Caroline’s Cupcakes, Buehler’s and Fishers Foods.

The dress code is shirts and ties for men and dresses for women, with tuxedos and gowns encouraged. A professional photographer will shoot prom portraits. All ages — 21 and over — are welcome, Carmany emphasizes.

Canton is the adopted hometown of Carmany, a Malone University grad who moved back here after stints in Chicago and Philadelphia. He has an art studio at 2nd April Galerie downtown, and an eye toward organizing more local events.

About Stark County Hunger Task Force, Carmany says, “I really like what their mission statement says, about everybody needing a little help once in awhile. They were very open to (the fundraiser). They’ve been helping out a lot.”

Tickets to the Canton Prom must be purchased in advance. They are available at www.the-prom.com and 2nd April Galerie.

Board & staff awards:

Welcome to the 2011 Foodies Awards. This inaugural event, in conjunction with the annual January board and staff dinner, is a moment of reflection and gratitude to board members, staff members and events throughout the 2011 hunger fighting season.

All too often I hear “I’m just doing my job” or “It was no big deal.” But the truth is we are all committed to our cause of fighting hunger in Stark County and I feel recognition and gratitude are in order for those who go above and beyond the call of “their job” or role. Because fighting hunger IS a big deal.

These awards were chosen at the sole discretion of myself, as an extension of appreciation from all of the staff of Stark County Hunger Task Force for the committed service of our hunger fighters.

Thank you to all board and staff members, we had a challenging 2011 but we prevailed to have served the most clients in our history and we shall continue to press the boundaries of where our future leads us…together we will not just fight hunger but one day eradicate food insecurity in Stark County!
